Manganese occurs naturally in the environment and is often found in groundwater and surface water in Virginia. At water treatment facilities, the primary focus is reducing manganese concentrations below the recommended limit for aesthetic control. However, recent research has sparked interest on the potential impact of manganese on corrosion control in distribution systems, which could lead to changes in manganese regulations.

The VA AWWA Education Committee has assembled a webinar that focuses on the removal of manganese through the water treatment process.  This webinar will be broken into 3 parts:
  • The first presentation will provide a general introduction on the importance of manganese control, followed by a discussion on proven manganese removal approaches used in water treatment systems.
  • The second presentation will provide an overview of the recently completed Water Research Foundation Project #4749, which focused on optimizing biological manganese removal under cold-water conditions.
  • The final block will be an Open Forum where attendees can raise specific manganese issues that they are dealing with, and the team will discuss possible approaches to address.
This online webinar is sponsored by the VA AWWA Education Committee.
