The City of Newport News is currently seeking applicants for the positions of Engineer I,II, and III in the Waterworks Department
 
What would a typical day on the job be like – what type of work would I do?

The Engineer is responsible for complex engineering work involving the planning, designing, project management, and inspection of a variety of utilities projects in the Waterworks Department in the Production Division.
 
Day to day, you will  oversee and serve as project manager on major water utility projects such as the dam safety program or the water utility consultant engineering contract. You will identify, research, and recommend project needs, plans, and scope of work. This position also completes drafts requests for proposals, assist in selecting contractors, perform contract administration of major projects, and monitors work performed by contractors to ensure that contract plans, scope and specifications are being followed.  The Engineer is also responsible for overseeing project inspections, interpreting contracts, resolving conflicts, and negotiating contract changes, as appropriate, review and recommend invoices for payment.  This position also ensures the safety, security, and regulatory compliance of all work assigned.  
 
In addition to your daily duties, you will serve as a technical expert for engineering concerns related to water resources engineering and providing information related to water resources improvements, projects, programs, and activities. This position also keeps abreast of current and future issues and trends related to surface water resources and may review plans prepared by contractors to ensure compliance with City codes, State regulations, and design and construction standards.  
 
The Engineer may also be responsible for the effective supervision and administration of a project team including budget preparation and monitoring; development of capital equipment plans; purchasing and financial transactions, preparation of reports, prioritizing, and assigning work and related activities.
 
How much money can I make?
The salary range for the Engineer III position is $63k-$109k annually.  Salary is competitive based on education, qualifications, and experience. In addition to salary, the City offers a comprehensive benefits package designed to meet all of our employee’s needs!

What are the qualifications for this position?
There are (3) levels of Engineer distinguished by the level of work performed and the qualifications of the employee.
 
Engineer I - Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
 
Engineer II - Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field and 1 - 3 years of progressively responsible experience including project management experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
 
Engineer III - Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field and 3 - 5 years of progressively responsible experience including project management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Engineer III level must possess and maintain a current Engineer in Training (EIT) license or approved equivalency from the Commonwealth of Virginia. Professional Engineer (PE) is preferred and may be required.
