Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Utilize electronic locating devices and maps to locate and mark underground water and sewer utility lines to minimize damage to the utility system.
  • Work closely with Virginia 811, be familiar with Virginia Underground Utility Damage Prevention Act and interpretation of plans, permits and drawings.
  • Accurately mark water and sewer lines in accordance with the Damage Prevention
    Act and standards to indicate the approximate horizontal location of underground utilities using paint, flags, or stakes.
  • Responsible for excavator safety work area protection, and the prevention of damage to underground water and sanitary sewer infrastructure.
  • Skill in conducting thorough investigations, recording data accurately and assist in the resolution of complex location problems
  • Assist bureau heads in the location of special project features and activities of private locating sub-contractors.
  • Ability to understand written and verbal directions and instructions, such as “Request to Locate” (MU ticket).
  • Work in all types of weather conditions as well as nights, weekends, holidays, and standby as needed.
  • Work with and document agreed schedules of excavator
  • Prioritize work schedule; self-motivated.
  • Safely work on construction sites and traffic.
  • Valid Virginia or North Carolina driver’s license is required.

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS: Requires high school or GED or any equivalent combination of experience and training in fields providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferences:

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; good written and verbal communication skills; Familiarity with electronic mapping and work order systems. Experience with underground locating principles, knowledge, and experience.
