Water Resources Department, Wastewater Plant is seeking a Grit Screening Station Operator.  Duties include:

  • Performing routine semiskilled and heavy manual work in the handling and transfer of grit, screening, and other materials from the Wastewater Plant;
  • Operates  equipment including skidsteer, backhoe, forklift and roll-off 
  • Assists with the care and cleaning of Wastewater Treatment Facility buildings and grounds;
This position is a temporary position that works approximately 29 hours.  There is flexibility in your schedule.   
Compensation will be negotiated based on qualifications and relevant experience.

Essential Duties
  • Operates equipment such as roll-off, tractor trailer, skidsteer, forklift and backhoe to transfer dewatered waste materials from the Wastewater Plant;
  • Cleans up residuals with shovels,  hoses and other approved method;
  • Removes and installs tarp rails and similar on trailers and roll-offs.
  • Uses hand tools such as hammer, screw driver, wrench etc.; 
  • Uses fire hoses and other similar equipment;
  • Refuels and changes propane tanks on associated equipment;
  • Unloads trucks;
  • Stores and puts away tool and supplies when complete;
  • Cleans operating tanks, troughs, and weirs, using hoses, rakes, shovels and similar tools and at times involves work in confined spaces;
  • Works from ladders of various heights ;
  • Keeps work areas neat, clean and safe for access by others;
  • May Operate a forklift to unload trucks move supplies and empty trash dumpsters;
  • Reports repairs beyond capabilities of custodial workers to supervisor;
  • Cleans paints and maintains plant spaces such as industrial buildings;
  • Works around chemicals;
  • Reports needed repairs beyond his capabilities to supervisor;
  • Responds to emergency calls such as rain, snow, wind storms, etc.;
  • Moves furniture and boxes as needed;
  • Unloads supplies and maintains proper paperwork;
  • Assists other personnel as directed; 
  • Safety Equipment must be used as required;.
 ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  •  Maintains inventory of cleaning supplies, materials and equipment;
  • Performs regular custodial functions such as sweeping, vacuuming, stripping, waxing, mopping and buffing floors using a variety of specialized custodial equipment such as floor buffers, carpet extractors, wet/dry vacuums;
  • Completes simple work order forms;
  • Performs regular Ground maintenance tasks such as mowing, trimming etc.
  • Operates light power equipment- golf carts, snow removal equipment, steam or high pressure water, trimmers, and lawn mowers in performance of grounds and related activities;  
  • Performs related tasks as required;.
 
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES 
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

 

Minimum Education and Experience Required

Completion of tenth grade and/or some experience with operation of a loader and other motor equipment, general labor and grounds works; or equivalent combination of education and experience

 
Additional Requirements
  • Possession of a valid Class B or Class A Virginia Driver's License.  Class A preferred.  
  • Must have approved access to a telephone and reliable transportation to work.
