Fairfax Water has an immediate opening for a Laboratory Systems Administrator I/II/III.  This position will be filled as either I, II, or III depending on education and experience of selected candidate.  Under the supervision and direction of the Laboratory Manager, the Laboratory Systems Administrator (LSA) oversees and directs operation of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). The LSA serves as the laboratory leader and Information Technology Division (IT) liaison for network computer related issues, activities, and needs; supports laboratory computer applications, processes, software and hardware that interface and interact with LIMS;  provides training and technical support for system users; coordinates laboratory efforts and collaborates with external departments to achieve shared computer/data-related goals.

Essential functions include:
  • Oversees and directs operation, development, use, and maintenance of the LIMS and associated applications by:
    • Serving as the Accelerated Technology Laboratories Inc (ATL) Sample Master LIMS system database administrator
    • Maintaining and developing the LIMS program and database by working with the Fairfax Water IT Database Administrator and ATL technical support staff; applying updates and patches; creating and designing system customizations
    • Building queries, forms, electronic data transfer processes, macros, and reports to meet the needs of the laboratory and regulatory reporting requirements
    • Overseeing and maintaining the LIMS iMobile device field operations system
    • Implementing and maintaining the instrument data parsers and import systems
    • Developing and maintaining LIMS database and instrument data backup systems
    • Researching and evaluating new LIMS and computer/software products
  • Serves as the departmental lead for computer-related issues, activities, and needs by:
    • Serving as the primary liaison with IT and as a network computer administrator
    • Ensuring the Laboratory’s compliance with Fairfax Water business network policies and practices
    • Serving as the co-owner of the Laboratory SharePoint Pages
    • Creating and maintaining various Laboratory dashboards and web pages
    • Procuring computer-related services or products for the Laboratory
    • Performing computer-related tasks and activities in accordance with Good Automated Laboratory Practices (GALP)
  • Supports and maintains computer applications, processes, software, and hardware used in the capture and storage of digital raw, processed, and summary data by:
    • Ensuring that laboratory network hardware, computers, printers and software are maintained and working
    • Replacing aging equipment and installing patches, updates, and upgrades
  • Provides training and technical support for LIMS system users by:
    • Conducting LIMS lab and mobile systems user training, introductory to advanced
    • Working with staff to investigate and troubleshoot LIMS or computer issues
  • Coordinates Laboratory efforts with other organization departments or outside agencies to achieve shared computer/data-related goals including, but not limited to:
    • Working with LIMS/IT/WIMS/SAP/GIS/SCADA on computer/data sharing issues
    • Collaborating with IT, other organization departments, or other agencies to develop and maintain interfaces between laboratory and internal/external databases or instruments
 
Requirements:
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Information or Computer Science or natural science (Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or related natural science), or any equivalent combination of education, experience and knowledge 
  • One to three years (LSA I); minimum of five years (LSA II); or minimum of seven years (LSA III) of direct experience maintaining administering a LIMS database or equivalent and various development tools in a data collection and reporting environment required
  • Knowledge and experience with ATL Sample Master LIMS or equivalent system a plus
  • Knowledge of Good Automated Laboratory Practices (GALP)
  • Knowledge of the functional needs of a Certified Drinking Water Laboratory including instrumentation interfacing, data handling, chain of custody, workflow processes, etc.
  • Knowledge, experience, and proficiency using Microsoft Office 365, Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) with Excel macros, SQL Server and Access databases (DBA knowledge and skills with ATL SM considered a plus) including SQL programming
  • Must pass a controlled substance (drug) test for employment
