The Town is seeking an Operator for its Wastewater Treatment facility.  Operators perform responsible technical work in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant and its related equipment.  

In June of 2021, the Front Royal Town Council passed a resolution making it unlawful to require current or potential Town employees be vaccinated for COVID-19 as grounds for employment. The Town encourages individuals to apply regardless of COVID-19 vaccination status.

The hiring range for this position is $33,280 - $35,360 annually, dependent on experience and qualifications.  The Town of Front Royal is an Equal Opportunity Employer. 

Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills

 

  • Learn to operate a wastewater treatment plant; take samples; read gauges and charts; maintain plant equipment.
  • Make regular tours of plant and equipment; assist in plant operations.
  • Monitor gauges, meters, control panels, etc.
  • Record readings from meters and instruments.
  • Assist in calibrating meters.
  • Check functions of equipment.
  • Help perform various tests.
  • Regulate and adjust motors, pumps, blowers, valves, and other apparatus to meet changing operating conditions under supervision.
  • Collect samples of wastewater and sludge.
  • Monitor operation of gauges, charts, equipment, and motors.
  • Pump sludge treatment tanks and tanker.
  • Perform basic laboratory tests when required.
  • Assist in writing reports.
  • Unload and store chemical supplies in their proper places.
  • Clean and service pumps, motors, and other equipment.
  • Help perform routine equipment and plant monitoring maintenance.
  • Perform minor preventive maintenance on equipment and pumps.
  • Perform building and grounds maintenance duties.
  • Perform related tasks as required.

 

Minimum qualifications & Requirements

Requirements

  • Education: High School Diploma/GED
  • Experience: No experience required
  • Valid driver's license
  • Class 4 Wastewater Operators License within one (1) year of employment
  • CPR and First Aid
Knowledge
  • Common practices, tools, and terminology used in the wastewater treatment plant
  • Chemicals used in the plant
  • Hydraulic, chemical, and mechanical principles pertinent to wastewater treatment plant operations
  • Hazards of the job and safety precautions
Skills
  • Use and care of hand tools used by the department
  • Communicate in a clear and concise manner both orally and in writing.
  • Prioritize and complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Be organized and capable of multi-tasking.
Abilities
  • Check the operation of equipment and detect defects in their operation.
  • Follow directions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

 

Supplemental information

Work Environment

  • Wastewater Treatment Plant; The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, and atmospheric conditions. 
  • The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
Physical Demands
  • This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions.
