The Town of Front Royal is seeking a trainee or an experienced operator at its Water Treatment facility. A Plant Operator performs responsible technical work in the operation and maintenance of a water treatment plant and related equipment. The Town offers a competitive salary based on experience, certifications, and job performance.
SALARY: $33,280.00 - $50,000.00 Annually

In June of 2021, the Front Royal Town Council passed a resolution making it unlawful to require current or potential Town employees be vaccinated for COVID-19 as grounds for employment. The Town encourages individuals to apply regardless of COVID-19 vaccination status.

To attract experienced operators, the Town of Front Royal is offering a generous incentive to operators who hold a Virginia Water Treatment Plant Class 1 Operator License. An experienced operator meeting these requirements will receive a cash bonus of $3,000. 

The starting pay rate for a Class 1 Operator is dependent on experience and qualifications. The trainee hiring range for this position is $33,280 - $35,360 annually, dependent on experience and qualifications. The Town of Front Royal is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Learn to operate a Water Treatment plant, Raw and Potable Pumping Stations; take samples; read gauges and charts; maintain plant equipment to ensure federal and state water quality standards compliance.
  • Help to maintain records of water samples.
  • Prepare reports.
  • Help oversee proper functioning of water pumps, motors, chlorinators, filters, and chemical feeders making adjustments as necessary to maintain proper flow of water under the direction of a qualified operator.
  • Maintain proper levels in clear wells, storage tanks, and reservoirs.
  • Compile and maintain reports on water treated for monthly and daily averages.
  • Add or adjust addition of chemicals to water as necessary under direction of qualified operator.
  • Take notes of readings of meters and indicators.
  • Collect water samples from designated points.
  • Help perform basic chemical tests.
  • Unload and properly store chemical supplies.
  • Maintain proper water levels for fire suppression.
  • Check pump houses for proper operation.
  • Make chlorine feed and treatment adjustments under direction of qualified operator.
  • Replenish treatment equipment with chemicals.
  • Maintain records of chemical usage.
  • Report any needed maintenance to supervisor.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment and pumps.
  • Perform daily chemical and physical analyses on raw and finished water.
  • Perform building and grounds maintenance duties.
  • Perform related tasks as required.
  • Work nights, weekends, holidays & rotating shift
 
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Requirements
  • Education: High School Diploma/GED
  • Experience: No experience required
  • Valid driver's license
  • Class 4 Water Operators License within 1 year of employment
  • CPR, First Aid
 
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of common practices, tools, and terminology used in the water treatment plant
  • Knowledge of chemicals and their functions that are used in the plant
  • Knowledge of hazards of the job and safety precautions used by the department
  • Knowledge of use and care of hand tools used by the department
  • Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to prioritize and complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Ability to be organized and capable of multi-tasking.
  • Ability to follow directions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
  • Ability to learn and complete college level courses

Work Environment
  • The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, and atmospheric conditions.
 
Physical Demands
  • This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects;
  • Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions.
