Department of Water Resources Wastewater Treatment Plant is looking for  highly motivated Maintenance Mechanics with strong initiative to perform responsible skilled work in the maintenance, repair and installation of equipment in wastewater treatment.  Successful applicants must be able to assist in the repair and maintenance of a wide range of heavy industrial and intricate equipment.

The Wastewater Treatment  Plant is a 24/7 operations. Normal working hours are Monday - Friday, 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM with the expectation of rotating call duty during the nights, holidays and weekends. Starting salary is negotiable depending on skill level and/or experience.

The position advertised is for the Plant Mechanic Apprentice, compensation will be based on qualifications and experience.  Applicants who have the relevant qualifications and experience will be considered for the Plant Mechanic and the Plant Mastercraft Mechanic.  Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and experience for the Apprentice Mechanic starting pay will be $18.00/hr.

Essential Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

• Inspects equipment and machinery and determines needed maintenance;
• Replaces packing, bearings, seals, sleeves  worn parts on clarifiers;
• Repairs small engines, grinders, and pumps, valves, air compressors, boilers, chemical
   feeders, bar screens, aerators, grit collectors, water filters, etc.;
• Adjusts shaft alignments and couplings;
• Installs and replaces treatment equipment, piping and high pressure lines;
• Welds and fabricates repair parts;
• Performs preventive maintenance on a variety of equipment.;
• Maintains plant and pumping station buildings and grounds;
• Makes minor electrical repairs;
• Assists contractors in the installation of new equipment and machinery;
• Maintains records concerning work and purchases;
• Maintains inventory of spare parts and fittings;
• Rotates on-call coverage with other employees to respond to emergencies after hours and on weekends.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following
• Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned.
• When unusual situations occur and /or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Minimum Education and Experience Required

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and some mechanical maintenance experience in the repair and maintenance of heavy industrial machinery, preferably water or wastewater treatment and pumping equipment; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Requirements
  • Possession of valid driver's license issued by Commonwealth of Virginia with acceptable driving record based on City criteria; may be required to obtain additional licenses as needed;
  • Ability to obtain forklift certification within 6 month of employment;
  • Ownership or approved access to a telephone;
  • Relevant background checks must be completed and approved;
  • Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment. 
  • May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.
