This Utilities Department Principal Engineer will serve on the Construction Inspection Team as a project manager. The position is responsible for managing all facets of a project from design phase through construction completion. This includes all utility impacts associated with road improvement projects, including water and wastewater betterments, Utilities’ capital improvement projects, and Utilities’ Administration Building projects.

Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field; five years of engineering experience in water or wastewater systems; one year of supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Professional Engineer (PE) designation is preferred. Experience in managing projects and supervising strongly preferred. The successful candidate will be a self-starter, possess a strong technical aptitude, and have excellent technical writing and oral communication skills. Additionally, candidate must have proficient knowledge of water and wastewater systems, proficient in Microsoft Office applications, be a team player, and have the ability to develop positive working relationships.
Current valid driver’s license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Record must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within 30 days of interview date.

- You will serve as county representative in all facets of employment and work as part of a project team to manage road widening projects initiated by the Virginia Department of Transportation and Chesterfield Department of Transportation. This will include the review of impacts for proposed road widenings projects on the existing water and wastewater systems within Chesterfield County.
- You will evaluate water distribution and wastewater collection systems on road widening projects using engineering analysis, field data, and standard engineering practices.
- Prepare and review monthly reports, drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and contracts.
- Interact with the public and collaborate with other agencies, consulting firms, and internal/external customers.
- Host or attend meetings and presentations with diverse groups of internal and external customers pertaining to the replacement of the public water and wastewater systems.
- Will supervise one senior engineering assistant providing the training, guidance, and responsibility for reaching the departments goals and expectations for project completion.
