Chesterfield County’s Utilities Department is seeking a Principal Plant Operator to perform maintenance repairs on all plant equipment to include adjustments, repairs, and part replacements as directed. Responsible, as needed, to work twelve hours shifts as a potable water treatment plant operator of a high-rate conventional water treatment plant. Includes operation and maintenance of mechanical/chemical/hydraulic systems, calibration of chemical feeders/turbidimeters, analytical testing of water, sample collection, and handling of chemicals. Computer skills are needed to compile/collect plant data and to operate a computerized SCADA system. On occasion will need to handle 550-pound drums. Performs other work as required.

This position is part of an approved Career Development Plan (CDP) and offers career progression opportunities and salary incentives, as funding permits, based on performance, qualifications, and experience. Successful candidate will possess a high school diploma or GED and a Commonwealth of Virginia Class I Waterworks Operator's License is required for the advertised classification and salary range. Applicants with drinking water treatment experience, a Virginia Waterworks Operator's License, and three years of relevant experience are preferred. Ability to perform manual labor, lift fifty pounds, walk or stand for thirty continuous minutes.  Applicants without a Class I Waterworks Operator's License will receive consideration at lower level plant operator classifications and salary grades/ranges. Unlicensed Plant Operator: High school diploma or GED ($40,839 - $55,132).  Plant Operator: Hold a current Class III Commonwealth of Virginia Waterworks License or a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, environmental science, or any engineering field ($45,239 - $61,073). Senior Plant Operator: Hold a current Class II Commonwealth of Virginia Waterworks License ($50,114 - $67,654). Trainees and licensees with lower than Class I license will receive salary increases after passing higher license exams. Knowledge of coagulation process troubleshooting and water treatment laboratory procedures preferred. Understanding of potable water treatment pumps, motors, controls, and mechanical/electrical skills desirable. Must possess good communication skills, be capable of functioning in a team, and be responsible to accomplish independent work. Current valid driver’s license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview.
