Performs responsible skilled work in the operation of the water reclamation plant, supervising a shift as needed; does related work as required.
 
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The incumbent performs responsible skilled work in operating the water or wastewater treatment plant on an assigned shift. This is the senior-level worker on the shift, and the employee acts as supervisor when needed. This class may supervise both skilled and unskilled workers. Work is performed under the supervision of a Chief Plant Operator or the Operations Superintendent.
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK (illustrative only):
⎯ Observes operation of plant equipment and process for normal operation and identifies developing problems;
⎯ Modifies operation of plant equipment and process to prevent failure to plant operation;
⎯ Assists in plant training and safety programs;
⎯ Keeps records and prepares reports;
⎯ Performs minor and preventive maintenance on equipment;
⎯ Collects samples of plant process and performs some laboratory analysis for process control;
⎯ Supervises staff in the absence of the chief operator;
⎯ Briefs oncoming shift on operation experiences during prior shift;
⎯ Operates various equipment such as pumps, SCADA system, mixers, blowers, ozone generation, disinfection, sludge handling, filtration, etc. in the treatment process;
⎯ Performs work in non-occupiable spaces;
⎯ Reviews and evaluates the work performance of subordinate personnel;
⎯ Performs related work assigned.

 
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of the operation, repair and maintenance of water or wastewater treatment plant equipment and machinery; good knowledge of math and science as they apply to water or wastewater treatment; skill in operating water or wastewater treatment plant equipment; ability to analyze operating data and mechanical equipment and to make process changes; ability to read and interpret plans and regulations; ability to effectively supervise; ability to keep records and to prepare reports; physical condition that will permit activities including but not limited to lifting, stooping, climbing stairs and ladders and working under adverse temperature and/or weather conditions.
 
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school and four (4) years of experience in water reclamation plant operations; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
 
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a State Class II Waterworks or Wastewater Operator's License. May require a pre-employment physical examination and/or medical tests administered by Henrico County Employee Health Services, the components of which are based on and appropriate to the specific sensory demands and/or physical hazards of the assigned position. The successful candidate will have no felony convictions, including any convictions related to weapons or violence issues, in accordance with State Code.
