As a Valve Maintenance Specialist, you will be responsible for inspecting, repairing, and maintaining a variety of valves and appurtenances throughout the water distribution system to make the distribution of water easy, efficient and effective.   This position is located within the Waterworks department. Day to day, you will be overseeing valve field inspections, repairs, and maintenance for the department. Several crews will report to you, so you’ll need to ensure that you are organized and assign work efficiently to complete work in a timely manner.  With supervising a team of employees, you’ll also have the responsibility of performance management, employee relations, prioritizing and other related activities.
 
Providing customer service will be a large part of this role. You will work with various stakeholders, both internal and external to complete jobs. You will coordinate with paving contractors, City, County, and State officials, and citizen inquiry’s.  Some research will be required to make decisions on street resurfacing programs, valve and appurtenance information, valve or hydrant leaks, valve box hazards, or broken and damaged fire hydrants. Our goal is to ensure that the valve and appurtenances are efficient and functioning properly for the citizens of Newport News!
 
There will also be some administrative work required in this position like generating and completing work orders, reviewing and submitting time sheets, parts pick tickets, Miss Utility Requests, and providing valve information updates and various reports.
 
How much money can I make?
You will make a competitive salary ranging from $41k to $71k annually depending on your education, qualifications, and work experience. In addition to salary, the City offers a comprehensive benefits package designed to meet all of our employee’s needs!
 
What will I learn on the job?
Your knowledge and skills of water treatment information systems, technology infrastructure, and instrumentation will continuously develop while working in this position! You will also gain knowledge of different processes and policies as you supervise and lead your team. 
 
What are the qualifications for this position?
This position requires a high school diploma, 5-7 years of related experience and 1-2 years of lead or supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
 
An acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check and a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record will be required. In addition to the above requirements, we ask you to obtain your Flagging Certification within 6 months of employment.
