This position involves entry-level technical work in the Utilities Department in the operation and maintenance and cleaning of the water purification or wastewater treatment plant and related facilities and equipment. Work involves reading and recording gauges, instruments, and meters; regulating valves; drawing samples; maintaining accurate records; performing tests; and maintaining plant facilities, equipment and grounds under close supervision with an experienced operator.

Required:
UTILITY PLANT OPERATOR I - $50,000-$81,495 DOQ
- High school diploma (or GED) and one year of experience operating a water or wastewater treatment plant facility.
-Possession of a current Class III Water Works Operator License for Water Supply or Class III Virginia Wastewater Operators License for Water Pollution Control as issued by Virginia Department of Professional & Occupational Regulation (DPOR)
-Water or environmental laboratory experience
-Possession of a valid driver's license and a safe driving record.
-CPR / AED First Aid certification or ability to obtain within one year of employment.
-Knowledge and familiarity with Virginia Waterworks Regulations
-Knowledge in MS Suite applications and computer program applications appropriate to the position.
-Available to work shifts (nights, weekends and holidays)

OR

UTILITY PLANT OPERATOR II - $50,000-$88,071 DOQ
-HS/GED and two years of progressively responsible work in water or wastewater treatment.
-Water or environmental laboratory experience.
-Possession of a Class II Water Works Operator License or Class II Wastewater Operator's license as issued by the Virginia Department of Professional & Occupational Regulation (DPOR)
-CPR/AED First Aid certification or within one year of hire.
-Possession of a valid driver's license and a safe driving record.
-Experience with industrial computer control systems (SCDA) and process control system.
-Available to work shifts ( nights, weekends and holidays)

OR

SENIOR UTILITY PLANT OPERATOR - $52,446-$95,178 DOQ
-Graduation from high school (or GED), plus five years of progressively responsible work in water or wastewater treatment.
-Possession of a Class I Water Works Operator License or Class I Wastewater Operator's license as issued by the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation.
-Possession of a valid driver's license and a safe driving record.
-Completion of relevant NIMS ICS training courses within 6 months of hire date.
 
Preferred:
UTILITY PLANT OPERATOR I 
-Backflow device certification
-Experience with SCADA and Process Control Systems
-Completion of VDH/VWEA Operators Short School – Virginia Tech
-Possession of a commercial driver's license with appropriate endorsements and a safe driving record – (Water Pollution Control Division only).

OR

UTILITY PLANT OPERATOR II 
-Backflow device certification.
-Associates or Bachelors degree in Biology, Chemistry or other related science.
-Bacteriology Laboratory Experience.

OR

SENIOR UTILITY PLANT OPERATOR
-Supervisory and training experience.
-Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry or other related science.
-Completion of VA Operators Short School, Level 3.
-Possession of a valid commercial driver’s license with appropriate endorsements and a safe driving record.
