General Description: This is a supervisory, professional position that leads the work of skilled,
technical staff. The incumbent performs complex tasks to coordinate all aspects of wastewater
plant operations and maintenance. Hanover's Doswell Wastewater Treatment Plant is a 1 MGD activated
sludge wastewater treatment plant. The Superintendent of the Doswell Wastewater Treatment Plant
also oversees the operation and management of the Hanover Courthouse Sewage Treatment Plant, an
80,000 GPD activated sludge wastewater treatment plant.
 
Salary: $63,828.00 - $75,000.00 Annually
 
Organization: The Utility Superintendent reports to the Chief of Operations & Maintenance and supervises Utility Operators, Utility Supervisors and Utility Technicians.
 
Essential Functions:
  • Supervises employees, performing related human resources functions and completing necessary paperwork.
  • Assists financial operations of the department, including development and monitoring of budget.
  • Monitors plant/system operation and maintenance to assure federal and state compliance.
  • Maintains and enforces established safety procedures for all employees.
  • Assures all required documentation is accurate and meets county, state, and federal regulations.
  • Prepares reports and makes presentations as needed.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Must have knowledge of complex wastewater operations and procedures. Requires extensive knowledge of federal and state regulations. Working knowledge of budget cycle and ability to implement division budget, preferred. Must have ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
 
Education, Experience, and Training: High school diploma or equivalent required (college level work in engineering or hard sciences preferred) with a minimum of five (5) years' related experience, including supervision. Requires a class I Virginia Wastewater Operators License. Computer literacy required – OR – Any equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable.

  • Twelve-month probationary period
  • Pre-employment Physical Examination/Drug Test/Breath Alcohol Testing/Audiometric and repeated in accordance to policy thereafter
