It is time for Virginia to register their delegates for the AWWA Water Matters! Fly-in. This annual event allows members to meet with their legislative representatives to discuss water issues and concerns and informing them of the importance of water and water-related funding on the federal level. We invite you to participate in these congressional meetings to ensure your voice is heard.
If you have never participated in a Fly-In before, no worries - you will be provided with resources to guide the conversation by AWWA's Government Affairs office staff. Also, virtual meetings will be scheduled in advance, all you need to do is join the virtual meeting from your location. This is a GREAT opportunity for Young Professionals who would like to get more involved in the legislative process and making an impact on the water industry.
You have heard of Earth Day, but have you heard of Earth Hour? March 27th beginning at 8:30 pm is Earth Hour! EPA Region III notified the Office of Drinking Water that the agency will extend the effective date of the Revised Lead and Copper Rule (LCR) from March 16, 2021, to June 17, 2021. This will allow the EPA to seek further public input, particularly from communities that are most at risk of exposure to lead in drinking water.
During this time, EPA is seeking public comment on a second action to extend the effective date further - until December 16, 2021 - and to also extend the compliance deadline to September 16, 2024, so states have the full three years to take actions to achieve regulatory compliance.
For more than 30 years the American Water Works Association (AWWA) and its members have celebrated Drinking Water Week – a unique opportunity for both water professionals and the communities they serve to recognize the vital role water plays in our daily lives. To commemorate the week, water utilities, water organizations, government entities, environmental advocates, schools, and others throughout North America and beyond are encouraging consumers to learn more about the importance of water and water infrastructure, especially in times of crisis. This year’s celebration will be May 2-8, 2021, and observes the essential nature of our water utilities with the theme of “There When You Need It.”
Want to celebrate but don’t know where to start? The Water Awareness and Outreach Committee is crafting a VA AWWA Drinking Water Week toolkit to help! The toolkit will include sample social media graphics and posts, a press release, K12 educational materials, and a few ideas to show employees appreciation during the week. Be on the lookout for more information in the next few weeks.
EPA is proposing an SDWA rule that would require public water systems to collect national occurrence data for 29 PFAS and lithium. This proposed rule would require all community and nontransient non-community water systems serving 3,300 or more people, and a representative sample of smaller water systems, to conduct monitoring. PFAS and lithium are not currently subject to national primary drinking water regulations, and EPA is proposing to require the collection of the data to inform EPA decisions. This proposal fulfills a key commitment in ‘‘EPA’s 2019 Per and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Action Plan’’ (USEPA, 2019a) by proposing the collection of more drinking water occurrence data for a broader group of PFAS. This proposal identifies three analytical methods to support water system monitoring for a total of 30 contaminants, consisting of 29 PFAS and lithium.
