"An American Water Works Association membership allows students and young professionals to network with companies that align with their interests and gain insight into company culture and compatibility. Similarly, water professionals have access to a network of information and other professionals all striving towards the same goals."

As water service professionals, our core focus is to protect public health and the environment. We have traditionally met this public health mission as a silent service. Today, however, sensationalism around drinking water quality or infrastructure incidents, widespread broadcasting through social media, and the growth in public distrust of government agencies mean your community needs to hear from you.
This presentation will prepare members for the fast-paced way news travels today and equip participants with tools to respond appropriately. This interactive format will concentrate on risk communication strategies and techniques based on industry expert knowledge and utility lessons learned, providing best practices for risk communication and increasing comfort with communicating in a crisis.
The Water Utility Committee (WUC) seeks members interested in the legislative and regulatory process. Each year the WUC tracks the legislative action of the Virginia General Assembly, monitors regulatory actions being considered by the state, and keeps VA AWWA members informed of any potential impact on water utilities. Additionally, the WUC participates in the AWWA Fly-In in Washington DC, where we meet with our Virginia Delegation and discuss federal matters that are important to the water industry. Lastly, we host the Utility Manager’s Breakfast at WaterJAM and arrange speakers to discuss relevant and timely issues.
If you or anyone on your staff is interested in participating in the Water Utility Committee, please contact Tim Mitchell, Water Utility Committee Chair, at timothy.mitchell@lynchburgva.gov or 434.455.4252.
