2022-08-18 12:00:00Z | Aug 18, 2022 | Round Table Discussions – Practical Ways to Address the Lead and Copper Rule Revision (LCRR) |
Aug 18, 2022 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM |
Online |
LCRR requires a service line material inventory of all water systems covering the public and private side of the line, but many utilities lack a comprehensive inventory of the service lines, including the material. This roundtable will focus on strategies organizations like the City of Salem, VA have employed to develop the inventory using available sources such as GIS data, distribution system record data, lateral cards, work orders, plumbing codes, and meter replacement programs, to name a few. With the initial inventory due in 2024, now is the time for utilities to begin the process of building the inventory, developing their LCRR compliance programs, and streamlining these efforts as part of a greater asset management initiative.
Join the IT Committee on Thursday, Aug 18, 2022, at 12:00 p.m. for a roundtable discussion on how utilities are tackling these LCRR challenges, and what lessons have been learned along the way. Be prepared to discuss your approach to addressing the LCRR inventory requirements. The roundtable will be facilitated by Rajan Ray, VP of Product Strategy with CDM Smith/Trinnex. Attendees are encouraged to bring their expertise to the conversation and elevate awareness of this topic.

Oct 29, 2022 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM |
Old Dominion University - Engineering Systems Building |
Back after Covid, join us for the Seventh Annual Model Water Tower Competition in the Tidewater area. The challenge is to build a structurally efficient model water tower that holds water and can be filled and drained quickly while also being aesthetically pleasing. Middle school students from public, private, or home schools can compete in teams of up to four students each.
The objective of the competition is to make participants aware of the importance of reliable drinking water and the rewarding opportunities available in the water profession. The competition does this by having students develop an idea into a functioning water tower, just like water professionals do in the real world! Prizes will be awarded to the top three scoring teams, with a top prize of a $75 Visa gift card for each member of the first place team, a $50 gift card for each member of the second place team, and a $25 gift card for each member of the third place team.

2022-11-17 12:00:00Z | Nov 17, 2022 | Round Table Discussion- AWIA Requirements for Small Utilities |
Nov 17, 2022 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM |
Virtual Zoom |
The America’s Water Infrastructure Act (AWIA) of 2018 required drinking water systems serving more than 3,300 people to examine their system to develop risk and resilience assessments (RRAs) and emergency response plans (ERPs). One of the most notable requirements was that electronic systems needed to consider cybersecurity threats, which may not have been previously considered. This includes systems like industrial control systems (ICS), billing systems, business networks, etc. For small system owners, an AWIA cybersecurity assessment may not have been comprehensive, since the AWWA J100 standard used as the basis for most RRAs tends to provide a high-level overview of critical assets. In many cases AWIA results provided a glimpse as to why system owners need to implement a comprehensive cybersecurity program. This roundtable will briefly discuss how we worked with a small water utility to prepare a preliminary cybersecurity program using a well-known cybersecurity framework.
Join the IT Committee on Thursday, November 17, 2022, at 12:00 p.m. for a roundtable discussion on AWIA requirements as it pertains to small utilities. This discussion will be facilitated by Matthew Lick from CDM Smith. Attendees are encouraged to bring their expertise to the conversation.

2023-05-18 12:00:00Z | May 18, 2023 | Roundtable Discussion -Taming SCADA: An Overview of the ISA112 SCADA Systems Management Lifecycle |
May 18, 2023 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM |
In Summer 2022, the ISA112 SCADA Systems Standards committee released the second official draft of its new ISA112 SCADA Systems Management Lifecycle. The Lifecycle is comprised of 8 core activity groups, each broken down into individual work processes. The activity groups are: Continuous Processes, SCADA System Standards, Design, System Development, Hardware/Fabrication, Installation/Deployment, Commissioning/Start-up, and Operation/Maintenance. Together these eight groupings of work processes provide an organized method and framework for the long-term management of SCADA systems. Not surprisingly, the ISA112 SCADA management lifecycle places a special emphasis on having clear end-user system standards, standardized workflows, consistent management change processes, and ensuring system documentation is kept up to date. This presentation will provide a brief introduction to the ISA112 lifecycle, the rationale behind it, and how it can be applied to municipal water/wastewater SCADA systems.

Jan 17, 2024 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM |
Virtual Meeting via Zoom |
Join the Asset Management Focus Group of the Utility Management Committee on Wednesday, January 17th from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm for a webinar on Vertical Asset Condition Assessment. Continuing Education Credits: 1 CEU for Professional Engineers | CPE for Water and Wastewater Operators Pending Cost: $15 VWEA or VA AWWA Member | $25 Non-member
Moderator: Edward Shea, HDR Webinar Overview Vertical assets are essential components of water and wastewater treatment systems. They include treatment plants, pump stations, and storage tanks. These assets are often complex and expensive to replace, making it important to extend their service lives and ensure their reliable operation. Condition assessment is a critical process for evaluating the condition of vertical assets and identifying potential problems before they lead to failure. The speakers will present a framework to help utilities plan a vertical asset condition assessment program, and will address a variety of condition assessment approaches that can be used for vertical assets:
The speakers will also address methods for collecting and managing condition assessment data, as well as ways to incorporate the data into an overall asset management plan. Condition assessment should be an integral part of any utility's asset management plan. By regularly assessing the condition of its vertical assets, a utility can identify potential problems early on and take corrective action to prevent failures. This can help to extend the service lives of the assets, reduce maintenance costs, and improve overall system reliability. SPEAKERS Grace Caballero, PE, ENV SP Grace is a Water/Wastewater Project Manager with HDR in the DC/Northern Virginia area. She has 15 years of experience in water and wastewater engineering that includes work in both the public and private sector. She has led several infrastructure condition assessment efforts for both linear and vertical assets, is certified with the Institute of Asset Management (IAM) and participates in the IAM’s DC Chapter. Grace excels in communications and in field activities, where she frequently coordinates with contractors, operators, and other consulting engineers to execute complex treatment plant condition assessments.
Howard Robinson, WWTP Op-4a Howie Robinson is a Senior Operations Specialist with HDR in New York, NY. He is retired from NYC DEP where he served as Plant Superintendent and Chief Operator with over 30 years of experience in Wastewater and Resource Recovery. His experience ranges from Operations management, coordinating a workforce team of 100+ trade and scientific personnel, to managing multi-million dollar construction projects.

2024-04-18 12:00:00Z | Apr 18, 2024 | Roundtable Discussion: Upgrading for Redundancy - Creating a resilient communications structure for remote facilities |
Apr 18, 2024 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM |
Virtual Zoom |
Communications to remote facilities is critical to the operation of most modern water/wastewater utilities. Vertical facilities like tanks, pumps stations, vaults, and treatment plants need to have highly reliable and secure methods of communication with centralized monitoring locations ensuring high quality data, alerting, and visibility into process control, video, and access security systems. This telemetry can be the foundation for key technologies including asset management, business intelligence, site access and safety, and remote monitoring via SCADA. This can be a daunting project for complex organizations, but highly rewarding when done correctly. Join the Technology Services Committee as Andy Krapf, Loudoun Water’s Director of Operations Technology, leads a roundtable discussion about this important subject and reveals some lessons learned from Loudoun’s recent upgrade project.
There is no cost, and you don't need to register. For Zoom connection information, please email Cynthia.Barnes@vaawwa.org This event is brought to you by the VA AWWA | VWEA Technology Services Committee.
